FASC Winter Weekend
7th - 9th February 2014
Report by Anitra Green.
This year’s winter weekend, again at the Hotel Europa in Champfér/St Moritz, was just as much of a success as last year’s, if for slightly different reasons. Members from eight FASC clubs came along, plus a group from the BRA, whom we’d also invited to join in the fun. All 50 of us congregated on Friday evening for the welcome apero; some people had already arrived the previous evening, and some nearly didn’t make it at all because of all the snow!
I have rarely seen so much snow; apparently the Engadin hasn’t had so much for years. The weather while we were there was mixed, to say the least: some sunshine, a lot of cloud, unseasonably warm (but still below zero most of the time), and snow, snow, snow. The skiers were delighted as conditions were perfect, but visibility was sometimes lacking, and the famous White Turf event on Sunday was unfortunately cancelled after the first race, which was a big disappointment.
A high point – literally – for half the group was a trip by train over the Bernina to Alp Grüm, a wayside halt with dramatic views of the mountains in shifting cloud and sun, and a lovely restaurant. Drinking kirsch at midday is not really to be recommended, but what better after such an excellent cheese fondue? Afterwards we took the train back, with people getting off at various points to take a stroll through the magnificent countryside.
Between us we enjoyed practically everything the Upper Engadin has to offer: skiing on the Corvatsch and Corviglia, window shopping in St Moritz, walking and even snowshoeing on the well-prepared paths, relaxing in the hotel’s wellness centre, taking the buses up and down the valley and sight-seeing, and of course enjoying the culinary delights provided by the hotel. Many thanks are due to Francis and Vicky for their excellent organization; we’re already looking forward to the next winter weekend!
